The Neighbor Challenge

I have a special challenge for the readers of Girl Grows Up this week.  If you want to play along, you’ll have to give up three things first….

1) A Judgemental Heart

2) Bitterness

3) The Urge to Get Even

If you’re willing to leave those things behind, then keep reading. If not, enjoy the next blog in your Reader. :)

Okay…it’s safe to assume you want to play now, so here goes.

First, stop for a few seconds and think about someone you dislike. Someone you’d rather not be around.

I mean it! Stop and think of someone.

That’s right. That person. The first person who came to mind.

(If nobody came to mind, congrats…you must not need The Neighbor Challenge!)

Okay, who is it? Don’t tell me. Just keeping thinking about the person (hopefully it is just one person who came to mind). This is your person for our challenge.

Now that you’ve got someone in mind, let’s dig a little.

What is it you dislike about your person? Is it part of their character you deem a flaw? An annoying habit? Or something you just disagree with them about?

Did they do something to hurt you? Make you mad? Lose your trust?

Give this some thought, and when you’ve pinpointed what causes you to dislike your person, read on.

Some of the things most worth doing in life are the hardest. I don’t think that’s a new concept to anyone. Doing good work usually isn’t easy.

It’s not easy to give it your all.

It’s not easy to sacrifice your comfort for someone in need.

It’s not easy to overcome your feelings of annoyance, dislike, even hatred.

It’s not easy, but it’s worth it.

So let’s go back to your person and the cause of your dislike. In the grand scheme of life, how awful are they really? If you took a look at your own life, could you come up with an annoying habit, flawed characteristic or a time you hurt someone else? Give it a try. I think most of us can.

And don’t we all want others to love us despite our downfalls?

That brings us to this week’s challenge. Ready?

When you come into contact with your person this week, acknowledge (to yourself) there’s some junk involved in your relationship, then let that junk go. More than likely, the junk isn’t bothering your person at all. They’re probably oblivious to it. That means the junk is only affecting you. How fair is that?

Remember you have your own junk, and your person is a fellow human being who is loved just as much as you are by our Creator.

It’s easy to love those who we like. I think the hardest people in our lives probably need our love the most. Let’s test that theory this week, shall we?

Will you consider your person (perhaps an enemy) a neighbor this week? Let me know how it goes!

You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor and hate your enemy. But I tell you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be sons of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. If you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Are not even the tax collectors doing that? And if you greet only your brothers, what are you doing more than others? Do not even pagans do that?

10 or Less Tuesday: Time Flies

Thanks to all who participated last week! I hope you had fun summing up your week in 10 words or less. If you’re wondering who won the contests, check out the comments.

Okay, let’s try it again. This time, maybe we’ll get some newbies in the 10 or Less club!

Can you tell me something about your week in 10 or Less??

I can, and I bet you can, too.

My 10 or Less:

Stayed up until midnight (yikes!) because time flies with friends.

Etsy Artist Review

You probably already know about Etsy(And if you don’t, you really should grab a cup of your favorite beverage and spend some time looking around there.)

I think you should know about a specific Etsy artist whose products make perfect gifts. Her name is Jamie, and her shop is FabricYardandDesign.

Jamie makes really fun, personalized products like beach towels, pillowcases, children’s clothing and more.

The gifts I’ve ordered from FabricYardandDesign have come beautifully wrapped in cellophane and ribbon. Perfect for gift giving.

What makes ordering personalized gifts from Jamie even better is her superior customer service.  The latest item I ordered arrived on my front porch six days after I placed the order!!

That’s less than a week!

For a custom order!

And it was over Fourth of July weekend!

It doesn’t get much better than that. Thanks, Jamie!

10 or Less Tuesdays

I always say less is more when it comes to words.

Write too many words to get your point across, and I’ll probably stop reading.

Say too many words to get your point across, and I’ll definitely stop listening.

How would you communicate differently if you had a daily word limit? What if you only had 10 words to tell a story?

To promote my “less is more” mentality about words, I’m introducing “10 or Less Tuesdays.” Each Tuesday, I’ll challenge myself AND YOU to post the week’s story in 10 words or less. After you read my “10 or Less” come up with your own and leave it in the comments!

To jumpstart this weekly challenge, everyone who leaves a “10 or Less” in the comments will be entered into a random drawing to win your choice of three of my favorite new products (Sally Hansen’s Insta-Dri, Cocoa Roast Almonds or new Pretzel M&Ms).  I’ll announce the winner in the comments section on Monday. And because I’m so excited to see what you have to say, the composer of my favorite “10 or Less” will win one, too!

My first 10 or Less.

Start counting……………….now!

Baby crawls and gets first tooth. Mama’s heart smiles.

Nobody’s Perfect. Not Even Close.

So theBOY finally caught up on his reading last week. He found three typos and an outright mistake on Girl Grows Up.

I promptly fixed the typos, and he wanted me to tell everyone not to worry because he’ll be reviewing my posts from now on so mistakes like this won’t happen again.

I know. Now you can enjoy your Fourth of July weekend, right?

I hope you’re spending it with the ones you love!
