Dear Me at 16

Today I’m skipping Link Love to participate in Emily’s link up. She has a new book out for young women, and she’s encouraging us to remember what it was like to be 16. I didn’t think I’d have anything to say, but I was wrong…

In a few years, a well-meaning woman will say that you and theBOY won’t last through college.

She is wrong.

She will say that you will grow apart.

Instead, you will grow closer. You will love him more with each passing year.

So be kind to him. Respect him. He’s just a teenager now, like you, and you both have a lot to learn.

When you’re 20 and done with general classes, you will start worrying about what degree to pursue.

Don’t. You choose the right one.

When you graduate from college, you will think that you’ll never get a job because the economy is tanking.

You will find a job, so enjoy the last summer you’ll ever have to just be a ‘kid.’

Right now you can’t ever imagine having children, so you assume you won’t for one reason or another.

Stop worrying.

You will have children, and they will change your life. And theBOY? He’ll be the best daddy.

And just because I love you, a few more pointers…

Set a second alarm the night before your senior trip to Disney World. Trust me. Just do it, or your senior yearbook will remind the entire class of something you’d rather forget.

When you stand on stage at high school graduation and speak to your classmates, don’t be nervous. By the time you are 31 you won’t remember a single word you said. They won’t either.

Yes, you will continue to cry the night before every new adventure begins. Even the good ones. Just embrace it.

Pay attention to your friends. What they are going through matters, and having a friend who knows the past without saying it out loud is a gift.

Enjoy that comfortable mattress you’re sleeping on at mom and dad’s house. You’ll miss it.

Don’t feel bad about all the ice cream you’re eating. You won’t gain weight that you can’t lose until after you have your second baby.

Finally…

You’re going to make a lot of poor choices along the way, but you have a good God who loves and protects you through every mistake. He is good even when life feels bad, and He makes it all worthwhile.

  1. Love this!!! Lol about the senior trip comment. This may be terrible but I don’t remember you speaking at graduation. Some friend I am.

  2. Loved this too!! If it helps, I don’t remember what happened on the class trip and don’t remember what words you spoke at graduation. I am sure they were great!
